The Election Commission of India has issued an interim order freezing the name and election symbol of the Trinamool Congress following a dispute between two factions of the party. The dispute arose following the West Bengal legislative assembly elections, which resulted in the party splitting into two groups. One faction is led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while the other is led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Both sides have claimed to be the legitimate representative of the Trinamool Congress.
The Election Commission stated that the freeze will remain in effect until a final decision is reached regarding the party’s leadership and identity. A formal investigation will be conducted under Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order.
The ruling impacts upcoming by-elections in the Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies of West Bengal, scheduled for October 6. Because the party name and symbol are frozen, both factions are prohibited from using them in these contests. The Election Commission has ordered both groups to submit their preferred party names and a list of three symbols from the commission’s list of independent symbols by 11:00 a.m. on September 18. This interim arrangement is intended to allow both factions to participate in the by-elections under distinct identities.
