On 10 September 2026, Bangladesh’s Minister of Health, Sardar Shakib, spoke at a ceremony held at Dhaka Women’s College to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. During the event, he announced that a nationwide measles vaccination campaign would begin on 25 September.

Minister Shakib said that a large shipment of measles vaccine had already arrived in the country and that another significant consignment was expected on 17 September. He attributed the current shortage of vaccines to the previous government’s failure to maintain adequate stock, stating that the crisis was a result of that administration’s mismanagement.

In addition to the measles vaccination plans, Shakib addressed the dengue situation in Bangladesh. He noted that stagnant water in many parts of the country makes mosquito control difficult. He added that hospitals outside Dhaka have sufficient facilities for dengue treatment, yet patients continue to travel to the capital for care. When questioned about why doctors were transferring patients to Dhaka, the minister suggested that some medical professionals may act out of fear or caution, leading them to relocate patients to the capital.

These statements were made during the World Suicide Prevention Day event, which was organized by the Bangladesh Journal.
