Lebanon faces a more intense and wider escalation, according to a European diplomatic source who spoke to the newspaper “Al‑Jamahiriya” (The Republic).
The source said that the recent Israeli escalation in southern Lebanon was not a surprise. It was expected, given the continued military operations that have persisted despite the ceasefire agreement in place. The source added that the escalation has not stopped, even though it has had direct negative effects on the overall negotiation process between Lebanon and Israel, and on the framework agreement in particular.
What the diplomat described as most concerning is the lack of serious controls on the escalation. The source warned that this could lead to future, potentially more severe and broader escalations. The diplomat linked the possibility of such an escalation to the upcoming elections in Israel, which could heighten tensions in the region.
These developments, the source said, raise real concerns not only for the situation in southern Lebanon but for Lebanon as a whole.
