The opposition Liberal-National Coalition has expressed opposition to the bill in its current form. In a statement released on September 10, the coalition argued that the legislation lacks sufficient safeguards for free speech and journalism, while granting excessive authority to the Communications Minister.
These legislative efforts follow Australia’s implementation of a ban on social media access for children under 16, which was introduced last year. Despite the ban, recent data indicates that many individuals under 16 continue to access platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
