Japan’s Takumi Hojo secured the first gold medal of the Asian Games on Sunday, winning the men’s triathlon in Nagoya. Hojo completed the race at the Gamagori City Triathlon Venue in 52 minutes and 56 seconds.
The victory saw Hojo successfully defend the title previously held by his compatriot, Kenji Nener, who won the event in Hangzhou three years ago. China’s Zhang Xiuri finished in second place, trailing the winner by nine seconds, while Kazakhstan’s Arlan Zhanabay claimed the bronze medal with a time of 53 minutes and 11 seconds.
Hong Kong athletes Robin Elg and Oscar Coggins finished the race in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
Following his win, Hojo noted that the gold medal provided a significant boost to the Japanese team as they prepare for the upcoming women’s events and the relay competition.
