Angola reiterated the importance of reforming the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which ran from 22 to 28 September 2024 in New York.
Foreign Minister Téte António said the current structure of the Security Council “corrects the historical under‑representation of Africa” and is “indispensable and urgent” because the United Nations architecture still reflects the geopolitical reality of 1945 rather than today’s world.
“More than 80 years on, there is an evident mismatch between the political, demographic and economic weight of various regions and their representation in the main bodies of the global organisation,” António said in an exclusive interview with ANGOP in Luanda.
He noted that Africa, despite being one of the regions most affected by the Council’s decisions and contributing significantly to peacekeeping operations, does not have a single permanent seat. The African Union calls this a historical injustice that must be corrected.
