ICYMI: How MTN users can access FG’s N50,000 grant

MTN Nigeria has issued a warning to subscribers regarding fraudulent social media messages promising access to the Federal Government’s N50,000 monthly relief programme. The company clarified that instructions circulating online, which advise users to send “YES” to an unverified code to receive payment, are not official and should be disregarded. MTN Support cautioned users against clicking unverified links, sharing personal information, One-Time Passwords (OTPs), Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), or making payments based on suspicious messages. The company emphasized that it does not solicit such sensitive data through unofficial channels. The relief programme, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), is designed to provide financial assistance to vulnerable Nigerian households. According to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, beneficiaries are selected based on verified national identity records and the National Social Register. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, stated that beneficiaries are not required to apply, pay fees, or register through agents to receive the support. Eligible MTN subscribers are contacted through MoMo Payment Service Bank (PSB). To check eligibility or accept the support, users are advised to dial the official USSD code *671*0# from their registered phone numbers. If selected, beneficiaries will receive an official SMS from their payment provider requesting consent before funds are transferred to their mobile wallets. Other approved payment providers for the programme include ALAT by Wema, NairaGram, OPay, and Moniepoint. The government noted that the programme is being rolled out in phases. Individuals whose status appears as “NOT SELECTED” are not necessarily permanently excluded, though the government has not guaranteed that all non-selected individuals will be included in future batches. Beneficiaries who do not have a MoMo wallet can register by dialing *671# or downloading the MoMo NG application. Once funds are credited, they can be accessed via the app, USSD, or through a MoMo agent, or transferred to a bank account. For further enquiries or to report issues, the public is encouraged to contact the NERSI helpline at 0700-022-2222 or MoMo PSB customer support at 671.
