PM Mitchell leads NDC to historic victory

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has led the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to a historic electoral victory in Grenada, securing a second consecutive term in office. This marks the first time the party, founded in 1987, has achieved back-to-back election wins. According to preliminary results from the Parliamentary Elections Office, the NDC secured 14 of the 15 parliamentary seats. The New National Party (NNP) retained only one seat, St. George North West, where candidate Tawfiq Adrian Marlan Joseph defeated his challengers. This constituency was previously held for 42 years by former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, who retired earlier this year. The election saw notable shifts in leadership and party performance. Education Minister David Andrew successfully reclaimed the St. Andrew South East seat from NNP leader Emmalin Pierre, who had aimed to become the country’s first female prime minister. Following the results, Pierre acknowledged the outcome, stating that the NNP respects the decision of the electorate. Meanwhile, the newly formed Democratic People’s Movement (DPM), led by former foreign affairs minister Peter David, failed to secure any seats, with David losing his own bid for the Town of St. George seat to Attorney General Claudette Joseph. Addressing supporters at a rally at Pearls Airstrip, Prime Minister Mitchell described the victory as a reflection of the people’s belief in themselves and their vision for the country. He pledged that his administration would remain focused on prioritizing the needs of the citizens of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique over the next five years. Political analysts have characterized the results as a significant transition in Grenadian politics. Derek Ramsamooj, a Trinidad-based analyst, suggested the outcome signals an acceptance of new, dynamic leadership and potentially marks the end of the NNP’s long-standing political era. Barbados-based political scientist Peter Wickham described the NNP’s performance as “political carnage,” suggesting the party may need to undergo a period of internal renewal. The election saw a voter turnout of 63.3%, with 61,264 valid votes cast. The NDC received 37,369 votes, while the NNP polled 22,567 and the DPM received 1,189. Regional leaders, including the Prime Ministers of St. Lucia, Dominica, Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as the President of Guyana, have extended their congratulations to Prime Minister Mitchell. They expressed their commitment to continuing regional cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties with Grenada under his renewed mandate.
