Renuncia el fiscal de Florida, clave en la acusación de EE. UU. contra Raúl Castro

Federal prosecutor Jason Reding Quiñones, who had overseen the United States indictment of former Cuban president Raúl Castro, resigned from his position as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida on Friday. In a post on X, Quiñones announced that he had submitted his resignation to the President, effective immediately, and thanked President Donald Trump for appointing him, calling the experience a “unique privilege in life.” Quiñones had led the indictment against Castro for the 1993 deaths of four humanitarian aid pilots from the organization Hermanos al Rescate, as well as against other Cuban military personnel allegedly involved in the downing of two aircraft. The indictment was publicly unveiled in May at the Freedom Tower in Miami, a landmark for the Cuban exile community, and drew large crowds in support of the action. In addition to the Castro case, Quiñones was heading an investigation into a purported conspiracy by political rivals of former President Trump to prevent the current president from taking office. Several prosecutors assigned to that case had left the investigation weeks earlier over internal disagreements, and the inquiry has yet to produce significant progress after months of work. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Buckle praised Quiñones on X for his service, noting his leadership in combating violent crime, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and transnational crime, including the Castro indictment. Raúl Castro, 95, remains in Cuba despite the indictment. The case has come amid increasing economic pressure from Washington, which has tightened sanctions and restricted Cuba’s access to energy supplies, including petroleum, exacerbating the island’s economic crisis and power outages.
