Four arrested for drunk driving as Tobago Carnival policing intensifies

Four men were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during police operations in Tobago on Friday, as officers stepped up security arrangements for Tobago Carnival, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. The arrests took place during Operation Resolute Shield in Scarborough and Bacolet between 8.30 am and 12.30 pm. Police said the men, aged 30, 28, 40 and 41, recorded breath alcohol readings above the legal limit. The highest reading, attributed to a 41-year-old man from Ontario, Canada, was 74 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. Police said that was 39 microgrammes above the permitted limit. The other readings were 68, 59 and 43 microgrammes. Officers also completed nine stop-and-search forms and issued 13 fixed penalty notices. The violations included failure to wear seat belts, expired inspection stickers, defective tyres, driving without a tint exemption and carrying passengers in a dangerous manner. The operation covered the Stink and Dutty event at the Parade Grounds in Bacolet, along with passengers and vehicles arriving at Scarborough Port. The TTPS said no traffic-related incidents or major crimes were reported during the exercise. A separate roadblock operation in Shirvan and Crown Point, conducted between 10 am and 2 pm, resulted in three more arrests. Police said a 26-year-old Buccoo man was held for using obscene language, a 25-year-old Bon Accord man for driving without ever having been issued a permit, and a 39-year-old Canaan man on an outstanding affiliation warrant. Officers issued 21 traffic tickets during that exercise. Thirteen concerned vehicles without inspection stickers, three involved vehicles without insurance, and the remainder covered defective tyres, seat belt offences and a traffic sign violation. Deputy Commissioner of Police for Operations Suzette Martin said the division was ready for the remainder of Tobago Carnival following a final security briefing on Friday. Senior officers and support teams deployed from Trinidad reviewed communications and arrangements on land, in the air and at sea. According to the TTPS, operational planning began in August, ahead of Carnival events starting on October 3. Supporting personnel include officers from the Guard and Emergency Branch, Inter-Agency Task Force, Coastal and Air Support Unit, Operations Command Centre, Corporate Communications Department and Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch. Police said drones and marine assets would support surveillance around the coastline, popular beaches, major events and surrounding waters. Joint maritime operations would also cover waters between Trinidad and Tobago, with assistance from the Coast Guard and other agencies. The police service urged residents and visitors to obey traffic laws, avoid drinking and driving, and take personal safety precautions throughout the festivities.
