Barack Obama, la baza demócrata contra Trump mientras el partido busca nuevos liderazgos

Barack Obama Leads Democratic Push Ahead of Midterm Elections Atlanta, Georgia – Former President Barack Obama has stepped into a leading role for the Democratic Party as it prepares for the U.S. midterm elections on November 3. The party is seeking new leadership to define its direction after the 2024 presidential loss. At a rally in Atlanta on Wednesday, Obama urged voters to “say enough” after “two years of chaos, cruelty, corruption and incompetence,” and called for a vote for change. He spoke in support of Senator Jon Ossoff, whose re‑election is seen as crucial for Democrats in the Senate. Obama’s campaign activities include town‑hall meetings and televised ads, contrasting with the more subdued presence of other living former presidents, Joe Biden and Bill Clinton. According to Andrew Rudalevige, a U.S. politics expert at Bowdoin College, Obama’s role is to “generate enthusiasm and participation, not necessarily to convince.” His appearances are said to attract larger crowds and more media coverage. The former president’s influence is particularly strong among African‑American voters in states such as Georgia, where Trump won the 2024 election by a margin of just over 115,000 votes. “Obama represents hope, faith, and class,” said Patricia, an African‑American voter who attended the Atlanta rally. Obama’s remarks have also drawn responses from President‑elect Donald Trump. At a rally in Ohio on Saturday, Obama criticized the White House’s lavish décor, comparing it to a popular restaurant chain, and highlighted the financial struggles of ordinary citizens. Trump called Obama “stupid” in reply. While Obama’s presence has energized Democratic supporters, it does not guarantee electoral success. In 2024, he had campaigned for Vice‑Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump. Nevertheless, current polling shows a favorable trend for Democrats. The party’s leadership remains unclear as it looks toward the 2028 presidential election. Potential candidates include Harris, Ossoff, California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez. The recent victory of Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s mayoral race has also highlighted the social‑democratic wing of the party, though it is uncertain whether that success will translate to a national campaign. Obama continues to travel across the country to support Democratic candidates. On Saturday he visited Michigan to back Senatorial hopeful Abdul El‑Sayed, a progressive figure, and to help heal divisions that emerged during the primaries. As the midterm elections approach, the Democratic Party remains reliant on Obama’s ability to mobilize its base while it searches for a clear successor for the 2028 presidential race.
