Tragedia feroviară din Spania reduce șansele lui Pedro Sanchez de a câștiga alegerile

Nine months after a rail disaster near Córdoba that killed 46 people, a new tragedy has shaken Spain. The latest accident, which claimed 69 lives, has eroded public confidence in the country’s railway network and in the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, just weeks before the scheduled snap parliamentary elections on Sunday, 29 November 2026. The investigation into the Toledo incident has only just begun. Transport Minister Óscar Puente has suggested that the crash was caused by “human error.” The opposition People’s Party (PP) has demanded the minister’s resignation. “It is not only a very serious accident, but the second one in a very short period,” said Paco Camas, a representative of the Ipsos polling institute. “It destroys people’s trust not only in railways but in institutions in general,” he added. “In Spain, when such events happen, people blame the government.” For Sánchez’s administration, the rail disaster is the latest crisis in a series that includes corruption allegations against relatives of the prime minister, a migrant crisis in Ceuta, and protests sparked by the forced evacuation of a pensioner. Polls that had previously shown a lead for the centre‑right PP and the possibility of a parliamentary majority with the far‑right Vox have now shifted further in favour of the opposition. Before the accident, Sánchez was running a positive campaign aimed at persuading politically disengaged voters to support the Socialists. “They have lost complete control over the agenda and the emotional tone of the campaign,” explained Professor Pablo Simón of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. “It will now be extremely difficult. There is a general sense of decline, the impression that the country is no longer functioning properly.”
