Fernando Moronta relata sus inicios vendiendo dulces y limpiando zapatos en Moca

Fernando Moronta: From Rural Roots to Media and Legal Advocacy Moca, Espaillat – Licenciado Fernando Moronta, a lawyer and media professional, shared his life story and political views on the television program Coctel Político, broadcast on Moca Visión channel 48. The show, produced and hosted by journalist and lawyer Nicolás Arroyo Ramos, airs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Moronta, who grew up on his father’s farm in Estancia Nueva—a property once owned by former governor Luis Guzmán Taveras—recounted how his early years shaped his work ethic. “When we moved from the countryside to the city of Moca, I would sell my mother’s homemade sweets in the mornings and clean shoes in the Juan Lopito area in the afternoons,” he said. “I would give the money I earned to my mother to support our family.” He described Juan Lopito as a hub of civic activism, noting that residents frequently participated in protests and “quemas de goma” (rubber burnings) to demand government action. “That area was the heart of the Trueno de Machepa and the Popular movements; we all lived there and took part in the demonstrations,” Moronta recalled. Moronta criticized what he sees as neglect of the Espaillat province by local legislators. “The province is abandoned and needs special attention from the government and local authorities,” he said. “The four deputies and the senator representing us have been absent and detached from the people in the five municipalities and municipal districts. Each legislator must fulfill his historical responsibility, or the people will remove him from office.” He outlined his career path, beginning in radio at Radio Generación under the guidance of owner Gabino Núñez Rosa, after unsuccessful attempts at other community stations. He later worked at several radio stations in Santiago and the surrounding region. Moronta also highlighted his long-term residence in Juan Lopito, where he lived from age 14 until his marriage to Yovanna Almánzar, with whom he has three children who are now professionals in various fields. Moronta has been a prominent figure in Moca’s media scene for over two decades, producing the popular television program Al Medio Día alongside the late colleague Anselmo Compres. He expressed concern about the country’s moral decline and the lack of accountability among authorities, especially in Espaillat. “We need to focus on development projects that promote social, economic, tourism, and cultural growth,” he said. When asked about potential political involvement, Moronta indicated that the idea has been discussed by various groups. “We are considering it; we will see what happens,” he replied. Moronta’s background in law, inspired by a desire to defend those in need, continues to inform his public commentary and advocacy work.
