President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazwani of Mauritania attended the Russia‑Africa Summit in Moscow on 28 and 29 October 2026. The meeting, which brought together heads of state and senior officials from more than 50 African countries, aimed to assess Russia’s influence, resources and markets across the continent. For Mauritania, the summit represents a significant diplomatic opportunity. The country seeks to broaden its economic and strategic options by engaging in cooperation with Russia in key sectors such as agriculture, food security, energy, mining and maritime fishing. Officials have stressed that any agreements reached must translate into concrete investments and projects that bring technology, expertise and job creation to Mauritania. Politically, the Moscow forum offers Nouakchott a chance to diversify its partnerships while maintaining traditional ties with Western and Arab allies. The government has emphasized that successful diplomacy is measured not by excluding one partner in favor of another, but by leveraging international relationships to advance national interests. The outcome of the summit will determine whether Mauritania’s participation yields a modest diplomatic gain or marks a turning point toward a more structured partnership. The next challenge, according to officials, is to convert the agreements into priority projects and ensure their implementation meets rigorous standards of feasibility and national benefit. Cheikh Bouye Cheikhna Mohamed Taqhiyou Allah, Vice‑President of the Federation of Russian and former Soviet Union graduates and President of the Party of Unity and Development (PUD), also attended the summit, underscoring the importance of the event for Mauritania’s future economic diversification and sovereign decision‑making.
