Kathmandu, 10 Kartik 2024 – The Foreign Employment Department (FED) reported that the Israeli government’s request for Nepali caregivers has seen a markedly lower number of female applicants compared with male applicants. According to FED data, Israel had asked for 1,132 female caregivers, but only 690 (61 %) of the requested number applied. In contrast, Israel’s request for 332 male caregivers was met with 1,145 applications – more than three times the number requested. During the first week of the previous month, the department opened applications for 1,464 caregivers. Although roughly 16,000 applications were received, only 1,835 applicants completed the full application process. Of those who finished the process, 1,687 passed the mandatory “Af Skill” English‑language exam required for employment in Israel. Gagan Vist, head of the FED’s Israel branch, said that the high interest among male applicants and the shortfall of female applicants have created new challenges in the selection and supply process. He informed the Israeli authorities, through the Nepali embassy in Israel, that the number of male applications exceeded the requested figure by 813 and that female applications fell short by 442. Vist noted that the exam and application steps are distinct, and some candidates who passed the exam may not have completed the application. The department is currently verifying and certifying the received applications. Once the process is complete, it will publish a list of qualified candidates. Historically, Israel’s caregiver service was viewed as a safe and well‑paid opportunity for Nepali women. However, recent tensions between Israel and Iran and associated security concerns appear to have dampened interest among female applicants.
