Liu Hao, a 27‑year‑old food‑delivery driver from Fushun, Liaoning, and Hannah, a 30‑year‑old English teacher from Alabama, United States, announced their divorce after a little more than one year of marriage. The couple’s story, which began with a chance meeting in a Shanghai‑style apartment elevator in November 2024, attracted widespread attention across Chinese social media. How the couple met In November 2024, Hannah placed an order for a bowl of mixed noodles. While waiting for the delivery, she and Liu encountered each other in the building’s elevator. Liu, who speaks limited English, greeted her with the phrase “Hello, I love you.” The remark, translated by a smartphone app, sparked a conversation that led to a romantic relationship. The pair continued to communicate through translation software until they decided to marry. Marriage and early life together Liu proposed to Hannah in January 2025 at a subway station. They were married in March 2025 in Liu’s hometown. The wedding was held without a dowry or a car, and Hannah reportedly did not request a house or vehicle. The couple’s cross‑cultural union was praised by many netizens as a modern example of true love. Reasons for the split In a video posted on October 25, 2026, Liu explained that the marriage ended because of “cultural and lifestyle differences.” He said that most of their communication relied on translation apps, which often produced inaccurate translations and led to misunderstandings. Liu also cited differences in dietary preferences—he favored northern Chinese cuisine, while Hannah preferred sweet foods such as pizza—as a source of friction. He added that the “real‑world” demands of daily life eventually outweighed the romantic ideal that had brought them together. Allegations and clarifications After the announcement, some online commentators suggested that Liu had married Hannah to obtain a U.S. green card or to generate online traffic. Liu denied these claims, stating, “I only have a primary‑school education, and when we married I didn’t even know what a green card was.” He emphasized that there was no fraudulent marriage or infidelity. Other rumors circulated that Hannah was a “U.S. Ph.D.” holder. Hannah has not publicly confirmed her academic credentials, and no evidence supports the claim that she holds a doctoral degree. She has said that she is currently working in mainland China and declined to discuss the details of the divorce. Current status Hannah has moved to Hangzhou to teach, with plans to return to Liaoning in about two months to complete divorce paperwork. She intends to return to the United States in the summer of 2027. Liu has stated that the decision to separate was made in the best interest of both parties. The couple’s brief, high‑profile marriage and subsequent divorce highlight the challenges that can arise when partners come from markedly different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
