Main Points
Kush has revealed that his stage name began as a childhood nickname inspired by his cousin’s love for Lil Wayne before eventually taking on a much deeper personal meaning.
He explained that a cousin who regularly listened to Lil Wayne introduced him to underground music at a young age. One particular song containing the word “Kush” was played so frequently that people around him began calling him “little Kush”.
At the time, Kush said he did not understand the wider meaning or historical associations connected to the word.
That changed when he reached his early teenage years and began researching the ancient African Kingdom of Kush and the Kushite people.
Kush said learning about their history, intellect and civilisation caused him to connect more strongly with the name.
He eventually developed his own interpretation of the name around the idea of “higher learning”, combining what he had read about African history with the identity that had already followed him from childhood.
What began as a nickname linked to music ultimately became the professional name he chose to keep.
