Veteran Jamaican broadcaster Neville Bell has urged podcasters and other media personalities to recognise the responsibility that accompanies having a large audience.
Bell made the comments during an appearance on the No NDA Podcast while offering advice to host RushCam about working in the growing digital media space.
“Take what you do seriously. Realize that you have a responsibility,” Bell said.
He recalled making a joke on air around the time of a hurricane before immediately following it with serious instructions encouraging listeners to follow official information.
Bell later discovered that at least one listener had remembered the joke while apparently overlooking the warning that followed.
He said the experience changed his approach to broadcasting and taught him that certain subjects should not be treated casually because audiences may take comments from media personalities seriously.
Bell said broadcasters and online personalities can sometimes underestimate their influence or assume their audiences understand when something is intended as humour.
He encouraged content creators to remain bold and authentic while recognising that viewers and listeners may place significant weight on what they say.
