Dubai Media Office announced on Monday morning that Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a senior member of the ruling family, has died at the age of 76.
In response, the emirate declared a ten‑day period of official mourning. During this time, flags across Dubai will be flown at half‑mast.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and Vice‑President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, expressed his grief in a social‑media post: “May God have mercy on you, my brother.”
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also offered condolences, noting Sheikh Ahmed’s contributions to the development of the UAE since its founding would continue to inspire the country’s progress. Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum described the late Sheikh as a cherished family member who will remain in the family’s memories and prayers.
Born on 12 July 1950, Sheikh Ahmed was the fourth and youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, former ruler of Dubai. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain and later joined Dubai’s Central Military Region, where he rose to the rank of commander.
