New Zealand’s Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston has released independent data evaluating the economic impact of the government’s Events Attraction Package and Events Boost Fund. The findings indicate that these initiatives are generating significant visitor spending and community benefits across the country.
According to the report, the first four events supported by the Events Attraction Package—which included the Linkin Park and FIFA World Series in Auckland, the World Surf League Championship Tour 2026 in Raglan, and the ULTRA Music Festival in Wellington—delivered a net benefit of more than $15 million. These events attracted over 76,000 attendees, including nearly 30,000 visitors who traveled specifically for the occasions.
Minister Upston noted that these events also provided platforms for local talent, citing performances by VANA alongside Linkin Park, and appearances by QUIX and Mt Eden at the ULTRA Music Festival.
Data regarding the Events Boost Fund, which supports existing regional events, showed that the first 13 evaluated events generated more than $26 million in net benefit. These events drew over 192,000 attendees, with more than 60,000 visitors traveling to participate.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) will continue to publish and update these results on a quarterly basis as further events are completed. Future events supported by the government include performances by Bruno Mars in Auckland and System of a Down in Wellington, as well as the Race of Champions in Wellington and the Super Rugby Pacific Super Round in Christchurch.
