Security forces arrested at least 28 individuals, including two military personnel and seven women, during a security operation in the Malepe neighborhood of Beni, North Kivu, on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The operation was conducted in the commune of Beu following a recent increase in criminal activity in the area.
According to Nasson Murara, spokesperson for the Congolese National Police (PNC) in Beni, authorities seized two firearms and 169 rounds of ammunition during the sweep. The detainees have been transferred to relevant authorities for questioning as investigations continue into the origin of the weapons and the circumstances surrounding their possession.
The operation follows a series of violent incidents in the neighborhood. On Friday, September 18, three civilians, including a couple who worked as money changers, were killed in the same area. Local civil society organizations have reported over 50 burglaries in Beni throughout September, with more than 20 occurring in the Malepe neighborhood alone. Some of these incidents have resulted in fatalities and significant property loss.
In response to the rising insecurity, civil society groups had previously urged security services to intensify efforts to track down criminal elements. The police have called on local residents to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities to help curb the ongoing wave of urban crime.
