The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) said it was standing against what it called “madness” in the Northern Ireland Assembly on issues such as gender and climate change rules, according to communities minister Gordon Lyons.
Lyons spoke at the party’s annual conference on Saturday, in a session reported by the News Letter. He said Sinn Féin, the Alliance Party and the Social Democratic and Labour Party were more concerned about “looking good” than doing good, describing this as a major problem in current politics.
The minister warned that the Alliance Party’s proposed law to ban “conversion practices” would involve the party in family life and church matters, and he suggested the MLA behind the bill did not fully understand its consequences.
Lyons cited the climate change bill as an example of what he called virtue‑signalling. He said the bill set very stringent targets that would cost Northern Ireland an estimated £900 million a year, and that the focus on the bill had prevented the construction of the A5 road.
