Cardinal Daniel Sturla of Montevideo described the meeting as having both spiritual and human dimensions. He noted that the bishops presented several challenges to the Pope, including the impact of secularism on Uruguayan life, the state of families, and issues related to violence, specifically mentioning drug trafficking.
Sturla also addressed the preparations for the upcoming papal visit, expressing appreciation for the commitment shown by the Uruguayan state at both the national and departmental levels. Monsignor Milton Tróccoli, president of the Episcopal Conference of Uruguay and bishop of Maldonado, Punta del Este and Minas, characterized the Pope’s demeanor during the meeting as warm and emphasized the importance of the visit for the pastoral leadership of the Uruguayan Church.
During the encounter, the bishops presented Pope Leo XIV with a collection of letters and drawings submitted by Uruguayan citizens in anticipation of his visit, along with a thematic summary of the material. Additionally, the delegation gifted the pontiff a book titled Arquitectura, arte y patrimonio en las Iglesias del Uruguay, authored by Miguel Álvarez Montero and Julio Testoni.
