The Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced on Saturday that it has suspended the driver’s licenses of two individuals involved in separate incidents where vehicles obstructed fire trucks in Makati City. The suspensions, which range from three months to one year, follow investigations into delays faced by Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) units responding to emergencies on Macabulos Street in Barangay Bangkal and in Guadalupe Nuevo.
The LTO initiated the proceedings after video footage of the incidents circulated online, prompting the agency to issue Show Cause Orders to the involved motorists. During hearings held by the LTO’s Intelligence and Investigation Division, both drivers provided statements and documentation regarding their actions.
In the Barangay Bangkal incident, the driver admitted to double parking on Macabulos Street on September 12. He stated that he was performing repairs on his vehicle, which was elevated on a jack with a wheel removed, making it impossible to move the car immediately. The LTO found the driver liable for obstruction of traffic and parking in a prohibited area. He was deemed an improper person to operate a motor vehicle and received a three-month license suspension.
Regarding the incident in Guadalupe Nuevo, the driver claimed he did not intend to block the emergency vehicle and struggled to find a suitable location to pull over. However, investigators determined that there was sufficient space on the right side of the road for the driver to yield. The driver was found in violation of rules regarding the failure to yield to emergency vehicles and obstruction of traffic. Consequently, he was declared an improper person to operate a motor vehicle and received a one-year license suspension.
The LTO confirmed that both drivers have surrendered their licenses. Additionally, the vehicles involved in the incidents have been placed under alarm status as part of the agency’s standard enforcement procedures.
