Nearly 18,000 students in the Djugu territory and other parts of Ituri province have received protection through the Safer Schools initiative, according to a report released by the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The program, which began in June 2026, is a collaborative effort between MONUSCO and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC). It is designed to ensure educational continuity in regions where the presence of armed groups has frequently disrupted schooling.
To mitigate security risks, the mission has implemented daily joint patrols near schools and in areas identified as vulnerable. Additionally, UN peacekeepers conduct regular surveillance along primary routes used by students and teachers to commute to their institutions.
MONUSCO reported that these measures allowed thousands of students to complete their academic examinations in secure conditions. Between June 22 and June 25, 14,876 students participated in the national primary school exit examinations within the mission’s area of operations in Ituri. An additional 3,000 candidates from the Aru, Mahagi, and Mambasa territories brought the total number of beneficiaries to approximately 18,000.
The mission stated that the Safer Schools campaign aims to maintain school attendance and provide a stable learning environment despite ongoing security challenges. Students participating in the program have reported feeling safer and better able to focus on their studies, expressing a desire for the continued presence of these security measures.
