Szeged’s premature infant intensive care unit (ICU) has reopened after a temporary closure was lifted following a thorough investigation of a bacterial outbreak.
The closure was triggered when routine screening tests at the Szeged University Hospital identified the presence of extended‑spectrum beta‑lactamase (ESBL)–producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in the ICU environment.
In response, the hospital collaborated with local health authorities to conduct an immediate assessment and implement necessary infection‑control measures. The team performed extensive cleaning and disinfection of the unit’s air and surfaces.
Subsequent air and surface sampling yielded negative results, indicating that the Klebsiella contamination had been successfully eliminated.
Following the negative test outcomes, the Csongrád‑Csanád County Government Public Health Department lifted the admission restriction on Tuesday at 12:00 noon, allowing the ICU to resume patient admissions.
All infants admitted to the unit during the closure period remained asymptomatic, and no cases of infection were reported among the newborns.
The reopening of the premature ICU is expected to restore full neonatal care services to the community and reassure parents and healthcare providers of the facility’s safety standards.
