South African journalist Micah Reddy and his local fixer, Kooki Mahmoud, have been reported missing in Djibouti. The pair was last seen at approximately noon on Saturday.
Reddy, a former investigative journalist for the amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism, is known for his work on high-profile stories, including the GuptaLeaks. Sam Sole, managing partner at amaBhungane, expressed concern over the disappearance, describing Reddy as a fearless journalist. Sole noted that, based on the organization’s information, Reddy’s current investigation was not focused on the Republic of Djibouti or its government.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has issued a statement regarding the situation. Angela Quintal, the organization’s Africa director, stated that the CPJ is deeply concerned by the reports and has urged authorities in Djibouti to clarify the whereabouts of both men and ensure their safety.
Reddy’s career includes roles as the national coordinator for media freedom and diversity at the Right2Know Campaign and as the managing editor of the Yemen Times in Sana’a. He has also conducted research and reporting in Egypt, Ukraine, and other regions. Recently, he co-authored a book detailing the business dealings of Julius Malema.
