Thousands of athletes have gathered in Tenby, Wales, for the 2026 Ironman Wales triathlon. The race begins with a 2.4-mile swim at Tenby’s North Beach, followed by a 112-mile bike course through the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, including the notable Heartbreak Hill in Saundersfoot. The event concludes with a 26.2-mile run.
Professional competitors include former winner Nikki Bartlett, who is returning to defend her title against challengers such as Diede Diederiks and Merle Brunnée. The men’s field features Dylan Magnien, Henrik Goesch, and Cameron Wurf. Other notable participants include endurance athlete Sean Conway and former professional rugby player Shane Williams.
Local officials and organizers have implemented measures to manage the influx of spectators, estimated at 12,000 in the Saundersfoot area alone. Pembrokeshire County Councillor Chris Williams noted that additional toilet facilities and dedicated spectator areas have been established. Local organizations, including the Saundersfoot Wombles and the Saundersfoot Rotary, are coordinating with the council to manage litter collection following reports of delays in road reopening during previous years.
Dyfed-Powys Police have established a temporary flight restriction zone over Tenby to prohibit the use of drones. The restriction, which is in effect from 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, until 1:00 a.m. on Monday, September 14, prohibits unmanned aircraft from flying below 2,000 feet without police permission. Authorities stated the measure is intended to ensure public safety.
In response to reports of disruptive behavior by spectators in recent years, long-time attendee Rhydian Albert urged the public to remain respectful of the athletes. He emphasized the importance of keeping the course clear to prevent injuries and ensure the safety of participants.

Registration for the 2027 event will open to participants on-site from September 11 to 14, before becoming available to the general public on September 17.
