Main Points
In the first half of 2026, the GNR (National Republican Guard) in Castelo Branco recorded 163 incidents of domestic violence and abuse.
During the same period, the Investigation and Victim Support Unit (NIAVE) detained 16 individuals. Fifteen were taken for initial judicial interrogation and potential coercive measures, while one was detained to serve a prison sentence for domestic violence.
The unit also carried out 14 search warrants, resulting in the seizure of 21 firearms, 929 rounds of ammunition, and 25 pieces of computer equipment.
NIAVE’s mandate is to protect victims and combat domestic violence, a crime that the GNR regards as a public offence requiring collective responsibility for reporting.
The GNR regularly conducts awareness campaigns on domestic violence and reminds the public that assistance can be sought through the electronic complaint portal, the European emergency number 112, or by visiting the nearest GNR post. A dedicated application, MAI112, is also available for deaf citizens.
For further information, contact the GNR or consult the official GNR website.
