Recycling returns to Brac but no pick-up plan

**Recycling Re‑introduced on Grand Cayman’s Brac District Amid Ongoing Waste‑Management Challenges**

*Grand Cayman, 29 August 2026* – The Cayman Islands Government announced that recycling services have been reinstated in the Brac district, following the recent collapse of a proposed waste‑to‑energy project. While the re‑launch is intended to address the territory’s growing waste‑management concerns, officials confirmed that a territory‑wide, systematic collection programme has not yet been established.

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) said the recycling initiative, which had been suspended during the waste‑to‑energy feasibility study, is now operational again. Residents in Brac can once more separate recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, and metal for collection at designated drop‑off points.

Despite the restart, the government has not provided a timetable for a comprehensive curb‑side pick‑up service. “We are focusing on expanding recycling as a short‑term solution while we reassess longer‑term waste‑management options,” a government spokesperson said. The statement came after the abandonment of the most recent waste‑to‑energy proposal, which had been under consideration for several months.

The DEH emphasized that successful recycling depends on public participation and proper sorting of materials. It urged residents to use the newly opened recycling bins and to follow the department’s guidelines for separating waste.

The lack of a coordinated pick‑up schedule has drawn criticism from community members who argue that without regular collection, recycling uptake may remain low. Environmental groups have called for a clear plan that integrates recycling with broader waste‑reduction strategies, including potential future waste‑to‑energy or landfill alternatives.

The government has indicated that it will continue to evaluate options for a sustainable, island‑wide waste‑management system, but no further details have been released at this time.
