A motorcyclist in Bengaluru, India, narrowly escaped being crushed by a water tanker during a frightening incident that was captured on video and has since gone viral.
The incident occurred on Gunjur-Palya CDP Road in the Varthur area, where the road was reportedly badly damaged, waterlogged and riddled with potholes.
The rider has been identified in other Indian reports as Saurabh/Sourabh Agrawal, who reportedly works for Walmart in Bengaluru. He was carefully navigating the damaged stretch when his motorcycle encountered trouble near a large pothole as a tanker travelled alongside him.
Video shows the tanker moving toward the motorcycle as the vehicles negotiated the road. The bike became caught beneath the heavy vehicle, but the rider managed to jump away seconds before the tanker rolled over and crushed the motorcycle. He escaped being run over.
The tanker initially continued along the road. A commuter who recorded the incident said the vehicle was eventually stopped roughly 200 metres away. India Today reported that the tanker had no visible number plate, while NDTV reported that, when confronted, the driver allegedly had no licence and claimed he had only recently begun learning to drive.
A police complaint was subsequently filed. Free Press Journal reports that an FIR was registered and the tanker driver was arrested.
The footage has triggered renewed criticism online over Bengaluru’s deteriorating roads, potholes, waterlogging and the dangers faced by motorcyclists travelling beside heavy vehicles.
