The agricultural sector in Bouenza is contributing significantly to the country’s goal of achieving food self-sufficiency. Manioc, foufou, vegetables, and other local products are making their way to Pointe-Noire, gradually reducing the country’s dependence on food imports, which cost several billion FCFA annually.
According to reports, the bill for food and agricultural imports in Congo-Brazzaville traditionally ranges between 500 and 800 billion FCFA per year. This massive dependence weighs heavily on the national economy, despite the country’s vast untapped potential. The government is attempting to stimulate local production through relaunch programs to reduce external purchases.
In 2021, President Denis Sassou N’Guesso promised to promote agriculture nationwide during his presidential campaign, emphasizing the need to correct the country’s dependence on external food sources. With the oil rent decreasing in Congo-Brazzaville, Sassou N’Guesso aims to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on oil.
Agriculture could be a viable solution, but the sector has been neglected for years, resulting in the country importing over half of its food. However, the favorable climate, with alternating dry and rainy seasons, offers significant potential for agricultural development.
In March 2025, President Sassou-N’Guesso successfully completed a three-day working visit to the Bouenza department, where he emphasized the need to encourage young Congolese to invest in the agricultural sector, which he considers a key driver of economic and social development. The president also highlighted the importance of mechanizing agriculture to support local populations in their development efforts.
