Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Near Carúpano, Venezuela; No Immediate Damage Reported

In the early hours of August 12, 2026, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake was detected by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC). The tremor occurred at 4:14 am local time, with the epicenter pinpointed at latitude 10.67N and longitude 62.53W, at a depth of 75 kilometers.

The automatic calculations placed the earthquake’s epicenter 77 kilometers east of Carúpano, Venezuela. Other nearby cities include Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, which lies 113 kilometers to the west, and Maturín, Venezuela, located 124 kilometers northeast of the quake.

The UWI, SRC emphasized that the location results provided are preliminary. These findings have been generated by computer algorithms and may undergo revisions as further evaluations are conducted by SRC analysts.

Earthquakes of this magnitude can cause significant concern, although no immediate reports of damage or injuries have been released. Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant as experts continue to assess the situation.
