A government jet believed to be carrying Daniel Kinahan, the alleged leader of the Kinahan organised crime group, has landed in Ireland. The plane, which is thought to have been transporting Kinahan from Dubai, touched down at Casement aerodrome in Baldonnel on the outskirts of Dublin at approximately 6:30pm.
Kinahan, a Dublin boxing promoter in his late 40s, was arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in April on foot of an arrest warrant issued by the Irish courts. The warrant relates to alleged serious organised crime offences. Following a formal request from Irish authorities, the ministers of justice for Ireland and the UAE, Jim O’Callaghan and Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, confirmed Kinahan’s extradition.
The extradition decision was made after a judgment by the Dubai Court of Cassation, in accordance with the extradition treaty between Ireland and the UAE. In a statement, the ministers said that the decision “reflects the steadfast commitment of both countries to the rule of law and reinforces international judicial co-operation”.
After the plane landed, a convoy of vehicles with blacked-out windows left the aerodrome at high speed. Kinahan is expected to appear before the Special Criminal Court, where a crowd has gathered in anticipation of his arrival.
