In a decisive move to crack down on examination malpractices, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday approved amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. The revised law proposes stringent penalties, including a minimum of five years and up to ten years of imprisonment, along with a fine of up to Rs 10 crore for those found guilty of leaking exam papers or engaging in organised cheating.
The decision comes in the wake of the NEET UG paper leak scandal that triggered massive protests across the country. Under the existing law, individuals faced a maximum of three years in jail, while organised crimes carried a five-year term. The new bill aims to serve as a strong deterrent, with the government signalling zero tolerance for any breach of examination integrity.
The bill is expected to be introduced in Parliament on Monday, July 27, according to sources. The opposition has been demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET leak, but the government has focused on legislative action to address the systemic issue.
Citizens and student groups have welcomed the move, calling it a necessary step to restore confidence in the examination system. The enhanced penalties are seen as a direct response to public anger and the demand for accountability.
