Ottoville fire displaces 14, including 8 children and elderly grandmother

A major fire tore through a family compound in Ottoville last Friday afternoon, July 17, 2026, destroying three homes and leaving 14 people homeless. Witnesses say two of the homes were completely gutted while the third was partially burned. Remarkably, no injuries were reported.

Among the displaced are eight children and six adults, including an 88-year-old grandmother whose house was one of those fully destroyed. Tafuna Pulenu’u Liz Taliloa assessed the family’s condition and described them as ‘distraught, yet in good emotional state.’

Community leaders are calling for donations of water, food, soap, clothing, and other essentials. Faipule Fagaima Larry Sanitoa confirmed that TEMCO and the Red Cross have been notified and have begun providing assistance.

This fire is the latest in a troubling pattern. Since August 2025, there have been 10 fires across Tutuila, with at least two under investigation as arson. Sanitoa, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, has requested fire investigation reports from the Department of Search and Rescue.
