Ariadna Chávez, a judoka from Tulum, has earned a spot on Mexico’s national team for the World Cadet Judo Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador, but now faces a financial hurdle to compete. The championships, set for August 20-23, bring together the world’s best cadet-division judokas, and Chávez secured her place through years of discipline and results. However, the invitation did not include funding for travel, lodging, meals, or competition fees, leaving the athlete to raise the money herself.
Chávez, a three-time national champion and two-time national runner-up, has launched a fundraising campaign aimed at local businesses and residents. ‘Representing Mexico at a World Championship is a dream I have worked toward for many years,’ she said. ‘I need support to make this trip a reality.’ She hopes that small donations from the community will pool together to cover the costs, which include flights to Ecuador and accommodation during the event.
The young judoka’s appeal highlights a common challenge for amateur athletes in the region, where talent opens doors but finances often close them. Chávez believes a strong performance in Guayaquil would put Tulum and Quintana Roo on the international sporting map and inspire local youth to pursue sports. With the clock ticking, she continues training while seeking the resources to compete on the world stage.
