Boakai Faces Credibility Test as $19M Cocaine Probe Slows

This report covers boakai faces credibility test with key details and context.

Nearly six weeks after Liberia’s largest cocaine seizure in years, President Joseph Boakai is under mounting pressure to prove his government can investigate without fear or favor. The 237.6 kilograms of cocaine, worth over $19 million, were intercepted at Roberts International Airport on June 8. Boakai pledged that the investigation would follow the evidence wherever it leads—a promise that now defines his presidency.

Opposition leader Alexander Cummings has been the most vocal critic, describing the probe as ‘slow, secretive, and compromised.’ Senators Amara Konneh and Edwin Snowe have joined calls for an independent inquiry. Snowe alleged that individuals connected to the president’s family occupied offices linked to the case—an assertion the administration has not publicly rebutted.

Investigators revealed suspects attempted to bribe security to recover the shipment, and police suggest the consignment may be linked to an earlier undetected shipment, pointing to a trafficking network with deep roots in Liberia’s logistics chain. Charges so far involve five individuals and one firm, all lower-level figures, raising questions about who financed and protected the operation.

The government has dismissed criticism as political theater. Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah warned against labeling Liberia a ‘diplomatic pouch for drugs’ and claimed the network behind the seizure is using AI-generated disinformation to muddy the probe—a claim not supported by public evidence.

For Boakai, who promised to rebuild trust in state institutions, the case is a direct challenge. His own words describing the fight against drugs as a national emergency are now used by critics as a measuring stick. The stakes extend beyond Liberia: West Africa has become a transit corridor for cocaine, and how Liberia handles this case will influence international assessments of its reliability.
