Immunisation Progress in Lower-Income Countries: Sustained Investment Needed

New data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF reveal strong progress in routine immunisation coverage across lower-income countries, highlighting the critical role of sustained investment. The annual WHO and UNICEF Estimates of National Immunisation Coverage (WUENIC) show that countries supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, have made significant strides in reaching children with life-saving vaccines.

Gavi, a global partnership that includes WHO and UNICEF, helps vaccinate more than half of the world’s children. The latest figures underscore that continued funding is essential to maintain and accelerate these gains, especially in the face of emerging health threats.

Health officials stress that immunisation is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions. The progress reported offers hope but also a clear warning: without sustained investment, the achievements could be reversed, leaving millions of children vulnerable to preventable diseases.
