Chief Reporters from Bangladesh’s leading news outlets are demanding enhanced professional standards, comprehensive social security, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence in journalism. At a meeting organized by the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on July 19, they expressed deep frustration over stagnant wages for over a decade, calling for unified action to enforce the wage board and safeguard journalists’ dignity.
Senior journalist M Abdullah of Amar Desh pointed out that no structured salary increase has been seen since 2013. He urged journalist organizations to launch a movement for a new wage structure aligned with the national pay scale of government employees. He also emphasized securing retirement pensions and free healthcare through the Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust.
Shahidul Islam Khan of Ajker Patrika demanded effective implementation of a two-day weekly holiday for journalists, while Noimuddin of RisingBD called for a unified wage board covering print, online, and television media. Abul Kashem of The Business Standard stressed that the DRU must play a bolder, independent role in defending journalists’ social status and dignity.
DRU President Abu Saleh Akon reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to securing journalists’ rights, ensuring professional safety, and upholding press dignity. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to work collaboratively toward these institutional milestones.
