Egypt and Russia Begin Talks for Small and Floating Nuclear Reactors

Egypt and Russia’s state-owned atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, have officially initiated bilateral negotiations regarding the construction of additional nuclear power units across the North African nation. Rosatom Chief Executive Officer Alexei Likhachev confirmed that the expanded discussions encompass the development of traditional stationary reactors alongside specialized small-capacity and floating reactor projects. The talks mark a significant step in deepening energy cooperation between the two countries, building on the existing El Dabaa nuclear power plant project currently under construction. The inclusion of small modular reactors (SMRs) and floating nuclear power plants reflects a growing global trend toward versatile nuclear solutions. For Egypt, these technologies could provide flexible energy options for remote areas or industrial zones. The negotiations are expected to continue in the coming months, with potential economic and geopolitical implications.
