Far-right push to roll back abortion rights in Australia, expert warns

Conservative forces have failed in recent attempts to restrict abortion in NSW, South Australia, and Queensland, but the battle is far from over, according to a new analysis.

Writing for Green Left, activist and medical practitioner Kamala Emanuel warns that weak points in current laws are being exploited, and far-right groups are gaining momentum.

In NSW, a 2019 decriminalisation law included a statement opposing sex-selective abortion, which allowed MP John Ruddick to introduce a ban. Although it failed, it established a dangerous precedent.

Emanuel notes that the rise of One Nation and global far-right movements, emboldened by the US overturning Roe vs Wade, are fueling further attacks.

Access to abortion remains a ‘postcode lottery’, with regional areas particularly underserved.
