Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, hosted executives from Chinese defence firm Aerospace Long-March International Trade Co. (ALIT) at Fort Portal State Lodge, marking another high-level engagement between Kampala and Beijing. The meeting focused on advanced military technologies including unmanned aerial systems, satellite capabilities, and missile systems, as Uganda seeks to modernize its defence architecture amid terrorism and cross-border threats. This follows a defence cooperation agreement signed in September 2025 during Gen. Muhoozi’s visit to China, which emphasized training, joint exercises, and technology transfer. China’s role in Uganda’s defence sector dates back to 1989, when NORINCO built Luweero Industries, and has expanded to include drone manufacturing and industrial collaboration. The growing partnership contrasts with Uganda’s long-standing security ties with the US, which focus on intelligence and counterterrorism rather than hardware.
