EU Commissioner Kos Reiterates Call for North Macedonia’s Constitutional Changes

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has once again called on North Macedonia to implement constitutional changes as a key step toward European Union membership. During a meeting of the Economic and Social Committee in Brussels, Kos emphasized that the country must not only adopt the amendments but also continue building on necessary reforms.

The Commissioner’s statement reinforces the EU’s long-standing conditionality that has blocked progress in North Macedonia’s accession talks. The constitutional changes, which involve recognizing the Bulgarian minority, have been a contentious issue domestically.

Kos’s remarks come at a critical juncture as North Macedonia seeks to move forward with its EU integration process. The call for reforms is seen as both a reminder and a push for the government to deliver on its commitments.

Observers say the repeated demand highlights the EU’s firm stance on the matter, leaving little room for compromise. North Macedonia’s leaders now face the challenge of balancing EU requirements with domestic political realities.
