Albania Closes First EU Chapters, Awaiting Tough Reforms Ahead

Albania has provisionally closed its first three negotiating chapters with the European Union, marking a significant milestone in its accession journey. The announcement came during the ninth Intergovernmental Conference between Albania and EU member states on July 14, 2026.

The chapters closed include Chapter 25 on science and research, Chapter 26 on education, and Chapter 27 on culture. The progress reflects Albania’s alignment with EU standards in these areas.

However, the Brussels conference also highlighted the challenges ahead. EU officials stressed that further advancement hinges on substantial reforms in the rule of law, environmental protection, and full implementation of European standards.

The closure of these chapters is the first formal step since accession negotiations began. Attention now turns to how Albania will address the harder requirements that remain.
