Sligo Left Out of New Mental Health Nursing Teams as Minister Announces Recruitment

Sligo University Hospital has been excluded from a government plan to recruit ten specialist mental health nursing teams across Ireland, sparking concerns over regional inequality in mental health care.

Minister for Mental Health Mary Butler announced the recruitment drive on Wednesday, targeting ten unspecified hospitals. However, SUH was not included in the list, despite serving a large catchment area with significant mental health needs.

Local advocates argue the exclusion undermines efforts to improve access to specialist care in the northwest. The HSE has yet to comment on the criteria used to select the hospitals.

The news comes as Ireland continues to grapple with high demand for mental health services, with waiting lists for appointments stretching months in some regions.
