Guyana: Mohamed Calls for Transparency on Gas-to-Energy Project

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has called for increased transparency regarding the Gas-to-Energy Project in Guyana. He raised concerns about an alleged rupture in the project’s pipeline, questioning the government’s silence on the matter.

In a video statement released on Wednesday, Mohamed stated, “The Guyanese people deserve answers now,” emphasizing the need for clarity on several issues. He is seeking explanations on how the damage occurred, whether gas had been flowing through the pipeline at the time of the incident, and if any environmental assessments were conducted.

Additionally, Mohamed is requesting information about the costs associated with the repairs and the measures being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. He highlighted that the nearly US$3 billion project necessitates the highest levels of engineering, oversight, and accountability.

According to Mohamed, vessels have been stationed near the damaged section of the pipeline for several months, which he claims has contributed to escalating project costs. He also pointed out that the alleged rupture is linked to ongoing delays in the Gas-to-Energy Project, stating that promised reductions in electricity bills and cooking gas prices have not yet been realized.

“The timeline was shifted three times. This is gross incompetence,” he remarked. As of now, the government has not issued a public response to these allegations.
