A 20-year-old Police Constable has been remanded to prison following the murder of a Cuban national, Dailen Paneque Gomez. The accused, Randy Thomas, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where the capital charge of murder was formally read to him. The case involves the murder of 26-year-old Dailen Paneque Gomez, a Cuban citizen residing in Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, who worked at the Mon Repos Health Centre. Gomez was last seen on June 18, 2025, when she left for her shift. When she did not return, her family reported her missing, leading to an extensive search.
On June 24, local farmers discovered Gomez’s decomposed body in a marshy area of Enmore Backdam. The timeline of events is as follows:

- June 24: Her body is found by civilians in Enmore Backdam.
- June 26: Constable Randy Thomas confesses during interrogation.
- June 29: Thomas is arraigned and remanded to prison.
During interrogation, Thomas reportedly confessed to the premeditated murder. He stated that he had purchased a length of rope before picking up Gomez under false pretenses. He drove her to a secluded area, where he claimed a misunderstanding occurred, leading to him using an unlicensed firearm to kill her. He then concealed her body in the brush before leaving the scene.
The Office of Professional Responsibility and the Major Crimes Unit are investigating the origins of the firearm and any potential connections between the officer and the victim.
