Guyana: Guyana’s Gas-to-Energy Project at Wales Set for December Commissioning

Guyana’s gas-to-energy project at Wales is progressing towards its completion, with the first of four gas turbines anticipated to be commissioned by December. Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, shared this update during the Starting Point Podcast on Sunday. The initial 57-megawatt Siemens gas turbine is expected to become operational under a revised agreement with the contractor.

The remaining three gas turbines are projected to be commissioned approximately three months after the first one, collectively providing a total of 228 megawatts of gas-fired power. Additionally, two steam turbines are expected to come online a few months later, which will increase the plant’s total generating capacity to 300 megawatts.

Minister Indar highlighted that the project is anticipated to yield significant savings by substituting imported heavy fuel oil with natural gas as the primary fuel for electricity generation. The government has invested over US$722 million in various infrastructure improvements, including transmission lines, substations, and other grid enhancements to facilitate efficient power distribution across the coast.

This infrastructure development includes a new 230-kilovolt transmission network, upgraded substations, and a new national control center, all designed to strengthen the national grid and enhance reliability. Consumers are expected to experience more stable electricity supply once the project is operational.

Indar noted that the Siemens turbine technology is capable of recovering more quickly from system disturbances compared to the reciprocating engines currently utilized by the Guyana Power and Light Inc. However, he acknowledged that some temporary power outages may still occur as GPL undertakes substation upgrades and transitions customers to the new infrastructure. He emphasized that these efforts are essential for modernizing the country’s electricity network.
