Recent developments in Guyana have raised concerns about the potential movement of criminal gangs from neighboring countries. Professor Evan Ellis, a US Army War College expert focused on Latin America, suggests that gangs from Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia may be relocating deeper into Guyana as a result of increased pressure from the United States.
Ellis notes that the smuggling of 33 AK-47 assault rifles into Guyana could be indicative of this trend. He believes that the dynamics in Venezuela, influenced by US actions against criminal groups, are prompting these gangs to seek refuge in Guyana. He specifically mentions the Tren de Aragua gang, among others, as being part of this shift.
According to Ellis, the Brazilian gang Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) is also involved, potentially using Guyana as a route for drug and arms trafficking to Europe. He highlights that various criminal organizations, including the PCC and the Colombian leftist National Liberation Army (ELN), are currently operating in Guyana.
The Guyana Police Force and Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond, have not provided detailed responses regarding the motives behind the recent arms smuggling, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
In a related incident, a Venezuelan man was charged with possession of 23 AK-47 rifles and ammunition. Another individual faces terrorism charges linked to a bombing that resulted in casualties and property damage.
Ellis expresses concern that the ELN may be expanding its influence in Guyana, noting that there have been recent attacks on Guyana Defence Force patrols by unidentified individuals from the Venezuelan side of the border. He speculates that these actions may be linked to the ELN’s activities in the region.
Despite the tensions, Ellis does not believe that the Venezuelan government is directly involved in these attacks, nor does he think that criminal groups are being mobilized for an offensive against Guyana in light of ongoing legal disputes with the International Court of Justice.
While he acknowledges the potential for internal conflicts within Venezuela to affect Guyana, he emphasizes that the current leadership may prefer to maintain stability and avoid provoking the US government.
